"When Zach Morris of Third Rail Projects (creators of the Steampunk Haunted House) walks past an empty storefront, he doesn’t press his nose up against the glass and dream of the day when the space will be selling $5 foot-long subs or overpriced designer duds. Quite some time ago, he had the foresight to envision an evolving art installation inspired by Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass.” That dream is now a reality, albeit a twisted and ever-morphing one (appropriate, considering Carroll’s propensity for images and ideas that are as silly and surreal as they are dark and disturbing)." – Scott Stifler, Downtown Express

Project Descriptions:

A Series of Reveals
January 10 – March 18, 2011

For ten weeks, January 10 - March 18, 2011, site-specific artist Zach Morris of Third Rail Projects created a series of ten installations that animated the windows of the One New York Plaza Art Space. Each of the ten works evoked the dense, lush, dream-like worlds that are a hallmark of Morris’s projects, and are part of a series of incremental revelations in which audiences got increasingly deeper glimpses both into the artist’s creative process and into the art space itself. Each new work was unveiled the Monday morning of the workweek, and occupied the space until the following Friday. On Fridays, Morris began installation of the next work and opened his studio to passersby, welcoming visitors to observe his process, ask questions, and share comments.

The project culminated the week of March 14 - 18, for the “Final Reveal” when the art space was fully opened to the public, and they were able explore the art space’s interior, and get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the 9 prior installations. During this period, Morris was be on-site welcoming visitors from 12 - 6pm.

Rogue's Gallery
August 12, 2011 – November 11, 2011

In Winter 2011, Third Rail Projects transformed the Art Space with the installation "A Series of Reveals," and then moved to the plaza over the summer for the site-specific dance piece "Looking Glass." In Fall of 2011, Third Rail Projects returned to the Art Space on concourse level to create small scale installations with an interwoven narrative for visitors to explore – or become a permanent part of them.

During "Rogue’s Gallery," visitors were welcomed to stop in and get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the artistic process, and become part of the installations by posing for photographs that were transformed into whimsical, neo-Victorian portraits.
